Trail notes
The old Army supply route between the Colorado River and Camp Cady still runs as a nearly unbroken dirt line across the Mojave National Preserve. The driving is mostly moderate (sand, washboard, one volcanic climb), but the logistics are the trail: there is no fuel and no reliable water for the entire crossing, so range math decides whether your weekend works. Deep sand near Soda Lake and the Afton Canyon river crossing keep you honest.
