Trail notes
The Alpine Loop links Lake City, Cinnamon Pass, and Engineer Pass into a figure the San Juans were made for. It is graded enough for a careful stock 4x4 in good weather, yet the exposure, altitude, and afternoon lightning make it feel like a real expedition. American Basin's July wildflowers and the ghost town of Animas Forks anchor the itinerary; a spur to Silverton provides the loop's only fuel.
